Having operated a Wimborne estate agency for over a decade, we know why people love living in Wimborne. You’re in the right place if you’ve chosen Dorset as your next place to call home and want to know more about what Wimborne has to offer.

Where is Wimborne?

Wimborne Minster, often shortened to just Wimborne, is a market town located in Dorset in the South West of England. The town is believed to have gotten its name from the earliest name of the river Allen, which flows to the south of the town.

Why is Wimborne famous?

Wimborne is mostly known for its 1300-year-old church. It is a Saxon Church with Gothic and Normal architecture. The church is famous for several reasons. Firstly, it has a chained library, one of the first public libraries that dates back to 1686. A chained library is where books are chained to their bookcase, allowing people to read them within the library but not leave the library with them.

Wimborne Minster Church is also famous for its tombs. The burial sites of some famous people are located in the church, including the brother of Alfred the Great, King Ethelred, as well as the maternal grandparents of King Henry VIII. For these reasons, Wimborne Church is a must-visit when you first visit Wimborne.

What is Wimborne like to live in?

Residents of Wimborne enjoy a high quality of life. The town offers many benefits of rural living while remaining in close proximity to more urbanised areas and employment opportunities, including easy transport links. This is why many families choose to live in Wimborne when they work in places such as Bournemouth or Poole. The town boasts many clubs, committees and associations to keep locals entertained and social.

Things to do in Wimborne

Wimborne Church and multiple local walking trails for all abilities and fitness levels are some of the town’s biggest draw cards. But there are plenty of other things to see and do in the town and nearby areas. Here are some of the most popular:

  • Wimborne Market – the local market is the largest undercover market in the south of England, attracting scores of locals and tourists at every event. There’s also a big car boot sale most weekends
